Each new issue of hidden europe is a labour of love. We are especially proud of the mix of articles in this issue, the fourth we have created under the very real constraints on travel which have prevailed during the pandemic.

Each new issue of hidden europe is a labour of love. We are especially proud of the mix of articles in this issue, the fourth we have created under the very real constraints on travel which have prevailed during the pandemic.
hidden europe 63 is the third issue of the magazine that has been produced under the real constraints of restricted travel during the pandemic. Despite that limitation, we have a real feast of fine writing, with features on Alsace vineyards, rural Galicia, the small Italian city of Ferrara and the Strandzha region of southern Bulgaria. And much more besides.
There is a walking theme to issue 62 of hidden europe. We follow the coastal walk at Duino which inspired the Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke, tackle a long circular hike through Slovenia and wander through a rock city at Teplice in the Czech Republic. We also encounter the ghost of Machiavelli and Friedrich Engel’s alter ego, remember the Free State of Fiume and discover the Muslim communities of the Baltic region.
During those difficult days at the height of the pandemic, we resolved that Issue 61 of hidden europe really needed to be special. We’ve made space for a long account of a journey through Switzerland – the perfect excursion, might we suggest, for a post-lockdown adventure. We have articles on Russian art, a 500-year-old social housing experiment in Bavaria and on migrants in Luxembourg.
In issue 60 of hidden europe magazine, we explore the Hebridean island of South Uist, walk through the alleys of Birgu (Malta) and enjoy the sedate life of Labanoras in the forests of Lithuania. We also discover the art of indigo dyeing in Austria and review how Berliners handle the multiple historical narratives about their home city.
Issue 59 of hidden europe roams from Spain to Slovenia, from the hill country of the Vosges in eastern France to the Polish city of Kraków. We reflect on how the expectations of tourists shape the identity of places, drawing on the example of American visitors to southern Germany in the 1950s and 1960s. We also hop on a train to Sweden, consider whether one can overdose on great art and find out why parts of Europe's guidebook industry boomed after the end of the Great War.
In hidden europe 58, we roam from the Baltic States to the French coast, from Galway to Romania, along the way mapping a mix of cultures and communities. We take time out to consider what shapes a place and how it figures in the psyche. Forests, for example, feature strongly in the German imagination. We look at the rise and fall of the seaside resort and explore how a new breed of publisher has over the last 50 years breathed fresh life into the flagging guidebook industry.
In hidden europe 57, we visit North Ronaldsay and the Croatian island of Silba, explore notions of 'the wild', taste volcanic wines, and trace the history of Russian Old Believers in Poland. We also look at the fate of a canal and a railway in the Belarusian borderlands, take a trip to the Swiss village of Saint-Ursanne and cross the Atlantic to discover why a small village on the rocky coast of Labrador features so strongly in the Basque national narrative.
In hidden europe 56, we visit two spa towns, one in Bohemia and the other in Lithuania, travel the Swiss Jura by train, learn about the history of Leuven University Library and enjoy the frolics of the carnival in Mohács. And there is much more besides!
In hidden europe 55, we visit, amongst other things, the Ukrainian city of Lviv, go in search of the Mingrelians in the Abkhaz-Georgian borderlands on the Black Sea, explore religious architecture in Brittany and discover the ancient art of falconry in Lower Austria.
In hidden europe 54 we follow a new long-distance hiking trail in the Balkans, lose a chess match in Armenia, spend a night in a castle in Austria's Burgenland region and meet salt workers in Lanzarote. We also take the train through Europe's premier vine-growing regions, explore New Nature Writing, watch a film in Scotland's mobile cinema and discover a secret road crossing locks and sluices on the Dutch coast.
We have always seen hidden europe as more than merely a travel magazine. We have championed local interests without endorsing parochialism. So in hidden europe 53 we celebrate local interests and local concerns as we share samosas on the football terraces in Bradford, spend an afternoon by a lake in Turkey and visit island communities in Sweden and Denmark. That and much more besides!
hidden europe 52 tackles themes which have become familiar to regular readers of the magazine: issues of identity and belonging, of culture and community. We explore small towns in Extremadura and Saxony, take to the hills of Slovenia and discover puppetry in Prague. We also look at Frank Lloyd Wright's influence in Europe and ponder the passage of time at a Dutch windmill.
In the spring 2017 issue of hidden europe magazine, we feel the pulse of Jewish Warsaw, visit the workshop of a cooperative crafting filigree in Kosovo and report on the distinctive calvaries of north-west France. We also explore the Butrint region in Albania, flick through Thomas Cook's very first timetable and take a look at the Baltic's iconic red brick architecture.
In this winter 2016/2017 issue of hidden europe, we feature the Outer Hebrides, Albania, the Czech-German borderlands and the city of Oxford. We also visit a vineyard in Ukrainian Bessarabia, explore the Poprad Valley and ponder which cities in Europe are blessed with a distinctive geographical setting.
In this summer 2016 issue of hidden europe, we climb the famous Potemkin Steps in the Ukrainian town of Odessa, take the train from Rome south to Sicily and pay a visit to the Old Country, a reclaimed area of land that is one of the most intensive regions of fruit cultivation in northern Europe.
